How Can You Tell If You Have an Ear Wax Problem?
Hearing loss and a sensation of fullness in the ear are the most common symptoms. Other signs include tinnitus, itching, pain, discharge, odor, and vertigo. If you experience these, we recommend seeing your doctor before scheduling an ear wax removal appointment. Some individuals with recurrent wax build-up may need removal every six months.

What Causes Ear Wax Build-Up?
For many, ear wax naturally exits the ear canal without issue. However, some people experience build-up, which can lead to hearing loss, pain, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), itching, discharge, odor, coughing, and other problems. Contributing factors include:

• Narrow, hairy, or curved ear canals
• Wearing hearing aids
• Using cotton swabs or other objects in the ear
• Frequent use of ear plugs or earbud headphones
• Working in dusty or dirty environments
• Surfer’s ear (benign bone growth due to frequent cold water exposure)
• Genetic predisposition to wax build-up

What is Ear Microsuction?
Our trained nurses use an ear microsuction device, akin to a small ear vacuum, to corefully remove wax. They wear head-mounted binocular glasses and illuminate the ear with a bright light. Unlike ear syringing, this method does not involve water, making the process quick, hygienic, and painless.

How Long Does Ear Microsuction Take?
The procedure typically lasts between 15 and 30 minutes.

Is Ear Microsuction Safe?
Yes, it is considered the safest method for wax removal, used by most Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) specialists. We use the latest equipment and our registered nurses are fully trained. Unlike water syringing, ear microsuction is safe for individuals with perforated eardrums. For those with complex ear issues or under the care of an ENT specialist, consult your doctor before booking. We do not provide this service to children under 12 years old.

What is the Cost of Ear Microsuction?
The procedure costs $90 for one ear or $80 for concession card holders. If both ears need treatment, the second ear is done at a discounted rate. If no wax is found, a one-off assessment fee of $20 is charged. If a follow-up visit within seven days is needed to remove all the wax, there is no additional charge.

Should You Use Wax Softening Drops?
Avoid wax softening drops if you have a perforated eardrum. If not, they are optional. We recommend using pharmacy-grade olive oil or products like Waxsol for 1-2 days before the procedure. After applying drops, lie on your side for five minutes.
